Artist Statement
The Album Redesign project is a collection of music album elements, including a vinyl cover, vinyl labels, two digital mockups of the vinyl, as well as 3 digital music streaming mockups, all inspired by the existing record “Thank u, next” by Ariana Grande. The album system shows a juxtaposition in typography as well as form, showing the duality of soft femininity and strength and realism that is inspired by musicality and lyricism of the record.
Physical Manipulations
Through experimentation, I found that a typography manipulation would be able to display the title of the album, as well as be a contributing factor to the visual composition of the album cover. When digitizing my design, I found a new challenge that was finding typefaces that work with my physical manipulations, whether the typefaces are too distracting, or not fitting with the theme. Through this process I learned the importance in the balance between typefaces that express the artistic elements and themes of a design, while still successfully communicating the information necessary.
Vinyl Labels
The vinyl labels continue the design system seen on the cover. By including the calligraphic typeface used on the cover, and the serif typeface used for the tracklist, hierarchy through typeface choice is seen. Furthermore, the vinyl labels display the stamped background, as well as the “tape” element to emulate the design choices of the cover. Both side a and side b include a tracklist, song length time stamps, RPMs, the artists name, album title, as well as Republic Records’s producer logo.
